It will come as little surprise to those who have seen him compete, but last week it was announced that Straight Blast Gym’s Gunnar Nelson would be headlining the UFC Fight Night 53 event. Nelson will face off against 17-8 welterweight Rick Story in Stockholm on October 4th. Some might attribute Nelson’s headline billing to the fact that he is Icelandic, and the Scandinavian connection makes him the perfect fighter to put in a main event taking place in Sweden’s capital city. But despite that, there can be no doubt that Gunnar Nelson has earned his place at the top of the card, with an unbeaten record that, after UFC Dublin, now extends to fourteen professional fights (including four in the UFC).  It is this unbeaten record that has seen Gunnar Nelson now break into the top 15 rankings at welterweight (http://mmajunkie.com/rankings).

Of the event in Stockholm, Gunnar said “To headline a card in Sweden is huge for me. They are our neighbors and… I expect the Swedish crowd to be pretty loud. I believe I have a big fan base in Sweden. They love my kind of style of fighting and I am, of course, Scandinavian, so we have a good connection.”

But it is not just the fight fans in Sweden who are noticing Gunnar. Along with his impressive unbeaten record, Nelson now also boasts back-to-back UFC ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus awards, his defeat of Zak Cummings via rear naked choke in Ireland following on from a previous submission victory over Omari Akhmedov in London this March. Despite his calm demeanor, there is little doubt that Nelson is as capable as anyone when it comes to entertaining fans in the Octagon.

This match up will no doubt add to the buzz and excitement surrounding Straight Blast Gym’s current fighters, particularly those training at SBG Ireland with Coach John Kavanagh. Nelson will join team mate Conor McGregor in Las Vegas, who is training for his UFC 178 fight with Dustin Poirier in September. Whether brash and cocky pre-fight like McGregor, or calm and collected like Nelson, there is little doubt regarding the talent, hard work and dedication it has taken to achieve what these two athletes have. Please be sure to spread the word about these two exciting fighters. It truly is an amazing time to be a part of the Straight Blast Gym tribe!
