SBGi Curriculum

Is your objective to get in better shape? Do you want to relieve stress or maybe feel more confident? Perhaps you would like to learn a skill that is fun and interesting and that you won't appear awkward doing? If any or all of these are true then our Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Program is exactly what you are looking for!

Whether you want to learn to defend yourself in the street or compete in the ring, it is necessary to train in the three ranges of fighting:

Standup, Clinch and Ground.

We do not like to think in terms of techniques so much as what will work best at any given moment at any of the aforementioned ranges. As Krishnamurti often said... "The word is not the thing!" A punch is a punch, a kick a kick, an elbow an elbow, a knee a knee, a choke a choke, a throw a throw, an armlock an armlock. It does not matter where it originated from and what fancy name it has been given.

It is important to note that:

SBGi does not have any "street fighters."

Our gym instead has combat athletes -

who may be concerned with being able to defend themselves in the street. A byproduct of that training is sometimes the desire and ability of its athletes to compete in MMA, Muay Thai, BJJ or submission wrestling competitions. It is training in an "Alive" manner that allows our gym members to be successful in whatever endeavors they choose. If you don't spar, if your training is not "Alive" but instead a series of dead patterns and "flow drills", then what you do will not translate in what is actual fighting.

The vast majority of the members SBGi train exclusively for fitness and fun, which leads to stress release and a sense of well being. Drilling and sparring for sport has proven to be the most intensive, challenging and safe way to build the necessary attributes for self-defense as well as build overall fitness.

Stand Up Curriculum

The range in which both combatants are on their feet. Fighting in this range pulls extensively from Boxing and Muay Thai Kickboxing. At SBGi World Headquarters in Portland we draw heavily on a long tradition of strong boxing training. And you will find many avenues available for training stand up. These include MMA classes, kickboxing classes, and boxing classes as taught by coaches with decades of experience.

Clinch Curriculum

The range in which both combatants are in physical contact. Fighting in this range pulls extensively from Greco Roman and Free Style Wrestling as well as Muay Thai Kickboxing.

Ground Curriculum

Fighting in this range pulls almost entirely from Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Whether with a gi or without, BJJ is by far the most effective art for fighting on the ground. SBGi's Portland Gym has several BJJ black belt Coaches, giving members access to some of the best BJJ training available anywhere in the world! MMA is the combination of the above stated skill sets, integrated into one complete and effective game. The Coaches at SBG Portland will help you develop your skills in a fun, safe and healthy environment. An environment designed for people of all ages, backgrounds, and objectives. From our MMA fight team athletes, to a man or woman in their 50's who just want a fun way to get in shape. Our MMA classes will help you get there.
