SBG Portland Athletes Perform In Seattle
Medals from Black Belt to White at IBJJF Seattle International Open
Last weekend, a small contingent of SBG Portland athletes headed up to Seattle to join the rest of the Straight Blast Gym tribe at the IBJJF Seattle International Open. On a day that saw SBG Ireland headlining the UFC Dublin event, closer to home, SBG was impressing at the Pacific North West’s main IBJJF event.
The highlight of proceedings was the performance of SBG Portland coach, and Oregon’s first female black belt, Amanda Diggins. Amanda competed at black belt middleweight and won gold with a comfortable points win over Leanna Dittrich. Pulling guard before securing mount with a hip bump sweep early, Amanda spent a large amount of the match in control and her guard proved unpassable in the dying seconds as her opponent tried desperately to win points late on. You can view the entire match here. The win comes on the back of her gold and silver at weight and open class at the IBJJF Santa Cruz Pro tournament last month. Next week she heads to the World No Gi Championships to hopefully continue her impressive run!
Along with Amanda, SBG Portland’s David Walker took home a silver medal at purple belt Masters. In her first ever BJJ tournament, Kate Tomic also won a silver medal in her weight class, an especially impressive achievement.
The SBG Portland athletes added significant points to the overall Straight Blast Gym total. Paired with the efforts of a team from SBG Seattle and others, SBG secured a top ten position in the overall academy results. All SBG Portland athletes came back home with a medal. Congratulations to Kate, David, and Coach Amanda for their achievements. Click here for full results
