SBG Ireland’s Paddy Holohan In UFC Dublin Main Event
Paddy Holohan vs Smolka moved to main event after injury
For the second time in a week, injury has forced a reshuffle of the UFC Fight Night 76 card in Dublin. Last week, an injury to Stipe Miocic caused the cancellation of the co-main event, and today, it has been announced that an injury has caused the cancellation of the previous main event between Joe Duffy and Dustin Poirier. The UFC reported today that Duffy suffered a mild concussion during training this week, and that, due to the injury’s proximity to the event, cannot allow the fight to go ahead. While unfortunate for the fighters involved, it means that the scheduled bout between SBG Ireland’s Paddy Holohan and Louis Smolka has been moved up to main event status.
It is a great opportunity for Paddy, who was opening the card on his UFC debut in Dublin just last year. Holohan has talked in the past about the electric atmosphere that his hometown fans provided that night, and to walk out a little over a year later, only this time in the main event, will be a truly special moment for him. SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh said in his article for the42 just this week that Holohan was the man to step up on this card, stating his huge popularity with the local crowd. Alongside his current 3-1 UFC record, Paddy has been training and competing in Dublin with Kavanagh and SBG Ireland since day one. He has also opened his own SBG facility with Kavanagh in Tallaght, South Dublin, where he grew up. With all that in mind, Paddy Holohan, a local who despite his rise to the top continues to give back to the community he grew up in, is a natural choice to lead the card this weekend.
Paddy Holohan is joined by Aisling Daly and Cathal Pendred on a big night for SBG Ireland. Daly seeks to bounce back from a loss last time against Ericka Almeida, while Cathal Pendred takes on Tom Breese as he seeks to extend his UFC record to 5-1 and put aside his split decision defeat to John Howard. Good luck to Paddy, Cathal, Aisling and the SBG Ireland team this weekend!
