SBG Athletes Win Multiple BJJ Gold
Three SBG BJJ Black Belts Win Gold Medals This Weekend
This weekend three Straight Blast Gym athletes, all BJJ black belts, went to two different IBJJF tournaments on different sides of the country, and all three came home with multiple medals. John and Amanda Diggins competed at the Santa Cruz Pro tournament in California, while Leah Taylor competed at the IBJJF Atlanta Summer Open in Georgia.
Diggins’ at the Santa Cruz Pro
At the IBJJF Santa Cruz Pro tournament, held in Santa Cruz, California, SBG Portland coaches, John and Amanda Diggins, both entered weight class and Absolute categories, and both came away with two medals. Amanda Diggins took gold in the adult, black belt, female, middleweight division, and silver in the female, black belt, Open class, missing out on first place with a loss by a mere two points in the finals. John Diggins took gold in the Master’s black belt Open class, picking up a $1,000 reward, as well as securing a bronze medal in the Master’s black belt, medium-heavy division.
Leah Taylor at the Atlanta Open
While the Diggins’ once again emphatically represented Straight Blast Gym on the West Coast, SBG Montana coach and black belt, Leah Taylor, was competing out at the 2015 IBJJF Atlanta Summer Open. Entered in both the black belt, female, Medium Heavy and Open classes, Leah Taylor comfortably secured double gold, winning both divisions in her first tournament at black belt. As if double gold in her first black belt tournament weren’t enough, Leah won all of her matches in the tournament by submission.
The victorious black belts will provide much inspiration for all their Straight Blast Gym students, many of whom will be travelling from far and wide to compete at the Oregon Open in just two weeks’ time. The 2014 Oregon Open saw SBG take home the award for Top Team & Top Youth Team, and with athletes coming from all over the Pacific Northwest, SBG will look to be repeating that feat this time around.
