Martin Stapleton Wins BAMMA Title
Stapleton Takes Lightweight Title at BAMMA 23
Last weekend saw SBG Manchester’s Martin “50 Cal” Stapleton score an impressive win at the BAMMA 23 Night of Champions main event, and in the process, secure himself the organization’s vacant lightweight title. He faced off against Gavin Steritt, who came into the fight on a six fight win streak, including most recently, two wins in the Bellator organization. Despite the opponent’s solid pedigree, the SBG Manchester fighter made short work of the title fight. Only one minute and fifteen seconds of the first round had passed before Steritt was tapping; Stapleton having taken his opponent’s back and then applying a rear naked choke with remarkable efficiency.
The title victory leaves Stapleton unbeaten during his four fights with BAMMA. Not only that, none of his opponents have been able to go the distance thus far – all four going by way of knock out or submission. The title puts Martin Stapleton at the very top of arguably the UK’s deepest division.
After the fight, Stapleton told SevereMMA that he was surprised by how quickly the win came, but not by the result, stating that as soon as he step in the cage, everything felt right, and he knew he would finish his opponent inside the distance. Stapleton went on to say he doesn’t see much threat from the rest of the fighters in his division, and was more intrigued by the prospect of proving himself again against foreign competition, namely, Saad Awad, a fighter he lost to during his spell at Bellator. Stapleton sees himself as not the same fighter as he used to be, and that he would “destroy” his former opponent. He enjoys being with BAMMA, but believes he could equal any of the UFC’s top five lightweights.
Congratulations to Martin Stapleton and SBG Manchester on the title win! The whole tribe is excited to see what is next for the ever-improving Stapleton!
