Last year the oldest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gym in Portland Oregon (sbg)
decided that the time for us to give back to the community was long over due.
We started with charity fundraising. Our goal working with our first charity was to have the biggest impact we could locally, despite being a smaller organization. We focused on a fundraising endeavor that was based around addressing one of the most basic human needs… Hunger.
As the manager of a relatively small organization (compared to big donators like Costco) we thought it would be ambitious for the gym to fill two barrels with food. To help keep everyone motivated, we organized a battle within the gym. We pitted our coaches and students against one another to see who could get the most donations (we didn’t want anyone to be cheap so we counted ramen as 1/4 a can of food).
Boy were we surprised by the results! From a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gym in Portland Oregon (a niche not commonly associated with charity) we where able to get our students to fill not just Two but SIX barrels TO THE BRIM with food! Everyone at sbg, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gym in Portland Oregon, was extremely pleased with the results. We gave away equipment to our biggest donator, and were pleasantly surprised when we received a certificate from the Oregon food bank listing us as one of the top ten contributors!
After that first success we decided that we would make these charity drives (at bare minimum) an Annual event. Again we wanted to focus on basic human needs. We had already worked with the Oregon food bank (Which we where very happy with. Find more info here), so who do we pick now?
For our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gym in Portland Oregon, this is where one of our newest staff members comes into play.
Justin Abbot has been a long time member of our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gym in Portland Oregon. He is a member of our Elite UA, training directly under our head coach Matt Thornton.
Last year he had finally convinced his wife to come in and give Jiu Jitsu a shot. He brought her in to try one of coach Amanda Loewen’s classes and she was hooked right away. All of the staff at SBG could not help but notice her constant positive attitude and high energy.
When she approached us with an interest in helping out at the academy. Right away we had an idea!
Destiny has now been helping run and organize the social events for our, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gym in Portland Oregon. Including the BBQ/Flipcupski tournament that we posted about the other day. She was also behind the research that has led us to working with the Sunshine Division.
The Sunshine Division (More Info Here) is a local charity that has been operating in Portland since 1923. One Hundred Percent of the donations go to local people in need. This was right on par with the Oregon Food Bank; a way for us to give directly back to the community. We started again with a modest goal, two barrels. However we yet again were forced to expand. We currently have six barrels in our lobby, filling up with food and clothes for the fundraiser. The event ends mid September so donate while you can!
For this Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gym in Portland Oregon we have decided that this is not enough.
SBGi Portland is going to start running a bi-annual fundraisers AND
We want to hear from YOU!
What charity should we work with next?
Thanks for reading and remember. One Tribe. One Vibe.
