Cathal Pendred Faces Augusto Montano At UFC 188
SBG Ireland’s Pendred to face Montano in Mexico City
SBG Ireland fighter Cathal Pendred is set to step into the UFC Octagon once again, on June 13th, to face Augusto Montano in the Mexican’s hometown of Mexico City. The contest will be Cathal Pendred’s fourth appearance in the UFC, and his fourth fight in under twelve months, as he looks to extend his unbeaten run to twelve professional fights. Montano, with a professional record of 15-1, will be entering the UFC Octagon for only the second time, having previously scored a first round TKO over Chris Heatherly at UFC 180 back in November. Cathal Pendred talked to SevereMMA.com about his upcoming bout (article here).
Following on from UFC fights in Dublin, Stockholm and Boston, the trip to Mexico City will be the fourth country in as many outings for Pendred. Of the prospect of facing Augusto Montano in his home town, Pendred said:
“I’m delighted with it… One of the perks of the job is getting to travel around like this, I get to see all these cool places. I’m really looking forward to it… “I’m going to enjoy it, it’s a once in a lifetime experience. Not many people get to go down to Mexico and fight a Mexican guy and have 21,000 people screaming abuse at them.”
Despite the prospect of being the odd man out in an arena of twenty thousand plus people, Cathal Pendred is confident of his chances against Montano:
“I watched his fights and one of the things I’ve highlighted is that he just hasn’t fought the calibre of guys that I have. You look through his record, you look at the records of the guys he fought, he’s really only fought one good guy and that’s the guy he lost to – Sam Alvey.
“All the other guys are nobodies with here and there records. He never fought anyone of my calibre either, and that’s the most important thing. He’s never had someone as stubborn or as in your face as me, and I think he will struggle because I can make this a nasty night for him.”
That stubbornness has seen the SBG Ireland fighter through some tough spots in his previous UFC fights, battling it out to pick up two big decision victories where heart and determination were perhaps as much a factor as technical skill. It is something Pendred wants to improve upon:
“I think the most important thing, especially after my last performance, is putting on a good show this time…It’s been frustrating for me. I don’t think I’ve shown the best Cathal Pendred in the Octagon yet. I really want to get him out there. I’m going to go old school on this guy. I’m going to take him down and put some hurt him. I’m going to take his will away.”
Whatever the outcome, Pendred’s ability and heart will guarantee an exciting night as he seeks to make it 4-0 in the UFC come June 13th in Mexico City. Good luck to Cathal Pendred and all on the SBG Ireland team!
